An article on O’Reilly give some interesting stats about the growth of micro-blogging sites like Twitter

Some are saying that Twitter is replacing blogs.. or is it just expanding the market?
Post your thoughts here.. we’ll be adding this to the Twitter Handbook.

I think there is room for both. Twitter helps people that might not feel they can do large blog posts get their feet wet, and it is easier to keep up with since it is small. But if you have a lot to say or you are posting articles and reviews, you are going to need more than 140 characters, which means you need a blog.
I feel that micro-blogging will actually help develop your branding over time, but will never replace your blog. Your blog is where you can develop your concepts, introduce ideas, and offer your services in a very controlled way. With micro-blogging like Twitter, you can develop an audience, and link them over to more detailed information as you develop it.

Agreed. That’s my problem with the term “microblogging” Twitter is something else, and you don’t have to choose one or the other.. you can have both.
I don’t think it could replace blogging. Sometimes we just have more to say than 140 characters will allow.
I do not see twitter as a blogging tool. I do not blog (I am not goodwhen it comes to writing
) but I love IM. I see twitter as a SMS/IM/RSS agregator replacement.
It’s very simple – Twitter is an essential tool. Kudos to its inventors and early investors but there are many things it can’t do. WordPress was a game changer and some topics, such as my area of expertise, global warming, seldom can be covered in 140 characters.

I feel both are useful and both will survive. For leisurely reading to find what is happening the blogs are super but for up to the minute things twitter is wonderful and the interaction with others is priceless. Just MHO.
No, I don’t think it will replace blogs. It’s an AWESOME tool, I love it – and it brings a variety of benefits and uses, but because it’s “micro-blogging” you can’t get an entire idea out there – you can use it to drive people to your entire idea (your product, article, detailed thought, etc.)
I think Twitter and blogs work hand-in-hand. They compliment each other, they’re friends =)
Hi Im thinking that Twitter could be a ‘personal blog’ for individuals who dont have a blog, it does rather aggregate an individual’s personal interests, and sphere if they’re regular users?
“You are the micro” or is it “micro me”
And if you have fans of course it may be much more interesting than a blog for those truly enthusiastic fans…
