Twitter Handbook (Chapter 1) What is Twitter?
April 19th, 2008 · Filed Under: Chapter 1 · How to Twitter · POLL 4 Twitter · Twitter Handbook BOOK
That is the question of the day - isn’t it?
You’ve been hearing all this chatter about Twitter, perhaps you’ve even signed up - but then you’re asking - “Now What?!” Right?! LOL (Comon - admit it - even if you’re a Twitteratti by now, at one point, we all asked that question - right?)
When I started actively tweeting (that’s what they call it when you post on Twitter) I started describing Twitter by saying, “It’s like having a party in your pocket!”
But since my non-tweetin’ partner kept laughing at me when I said that - how about I leave the question up for my Tweeps (Twitter people / peeps = Tweeps) to answer the all important question of the day:
What is Twitter?
Please share your answer in the comments below in 140 characters (give or take) for possible inclusion in the 1st published book on Twitter: Twitter Handook.

Twitter is the app your momma warned you about.

@nemock here. Twitter is fun way to bring blogging back to the basics I remember from the early 90s when it was literally a web log. Clean, simple, fun.

Twitter is a way to get involved, stay connected, make friends, get to know the people behind the companies and domain names, and strike up conversations that could be worth gold to you down the road…

Twitter is a much simpler version of what Facebook originally was.

If the web’s the party everyone’s at, then:
Blogging is 8pm (the party’s just getting started, baby)
Facebook is 10pm (you’re loosening up & sensing who’s who)
Twitter is midnight (the food’s been eaten, the champagne’s been drunk, the barriers are down and everyone’s dancing).
Save yourself 4 hours - go straight to Twitter and dance (in the conversation). Seriously, where else is a smorgasbord of total strangers (gurus, mentors, customers and incredible new friends) so available?

Twitter is a place where you type short lines about what you’re doing, and your friends will quickly learn about it. It’s like mass SMS texting, only easier on the thumbs.

Twitter is something that if you aren’t just a bit clued up (step 1 for using Twitter is get the Twitterhandbook) may seem like a huge waste of time from a business perspective! BUT not so if you do the right things! OR it’s a wild way of having lots of fun or both.

To me, at it’s most basic, Twitter is an online water cooler, a simple place for gathering. On a grander scale, Twitter is the public square in town where everyone gathers. It’s where the town crier, shop owners, politicians, and average joe come together to share their daily developments, as well as town news.
Just like in real life, those with important information (or those that shout the loudest) will be heard above the rest.

Twitter is how I imagine the party line was on the telephone way back when. It is a way to peek into the lives of others and to build relationships with people in a rather unique way.

Twitter is like the white pages and yellow pages of a phone book combined into one, with business and/or friend connections just a call (tweet) away.

Twitter is a great tool to connect with people and their interests sources, and knowledge. It’s interesting to me b/c is user friendly (simple, quick, fun), and allows you to stay personal while doing business, and vice versa.

1. Twitter is the world.
2. It’s the newest serious addiction! I call for mass regulation and taxation! And lots of PSAs.
3. Twitter is mine. You can’t have it!
4. Twitter is a very polite mob. They never talk over each other and sometimes they give you good information.

What is Twitter?
It’s a tool that serves very nicely for increasing your blood pressure while in the middle of a hot tweet session, attempting to tweet a loud and poignant tweet, then getting the oh-so-chalkboard-nail-scratching “Twitter is over Capacity” message.
Oh, and my fingers are wayyyyy sore (not from scratching the chalk board, but) from twittling them on my desk, waiting for Twitter to come back online. It wasn’t like the tweet I tweeted could be retweeted. I can remember the gist of the tweet, but not the exact tweet itself. So now what do I do???
I mean, words never fit so good together in the tweet Twitter decided to accidently lose in their over-capacityness! Ya, sure, there were only 140 characters! But there’s more to a tweet than just remembering it and then posting it again when Twitter decides to take a twitaseltzer and revive itself!
There’s a thing called timing, and when you’re in the middle of a heated tweet session, TIMING MATTERS, just like SIZE MATTERS (I’m talking about the 140 characters, of course

Oh, I forgot you said 140 characters or less!
