One problem with the use of auto responders is the value of direct messaging has been diluted. I've 431 DMs, about 90% appear to be auto respond messages, about half of them include a link.
I use "replies" as much as I can, only ever sending DMs if something is too personal to be broadcast.

When Social Networking goes on Auto Pilot is it still Social Networking or is it crossing the line toward Social Marketing?

Part of Twitter's Charm is the connection, the sometimes almost instant connection with other like minded individuals. It's not an email, it's a quick note sent to your online friends your networking pals, and yes even to some of the online Giants in the Twitter Tweetscape!

Auto Responders have their place, but in my humble opinion, that place is not on Twitter.

Just my 11 Cents worth
