Twitter has facilitated a lot of new connections for me even in my local area. dmtweetup.org was built in response to Twitter and is now the central hub for tweetups in our area (Central Iowa).
One of the things that has helped us out at our meetups is the use of Tweetup Badges (@tweetupbadges), which are essentially like event badges with the users Twitter handle and their real name. That way, the next time you’re walking into a dark and gloomy bar, look for the guy with the Tweetup Badge on and mitigate the embarrassment that comes along with meeting someone for the first time in real life.

I know I posted a story here about the Triangle Tweetup a month or so ago–now a separate subgroup has been spawned–the Triangle Tweetdivas! http://www.tweetdivas.com Like Twitter, it just keeps evolving!

Nice to hear your success stories with twitter - I have not had such experiences yet here but all in good time - everyone is different and discovers how to use different tools in the world at their own pace and in their own ways -
