Is Everyone Using Twitter?

Once again, the numbers show fast growth, but show that we are just getting started in this Twitter revolution.

While the majority of people in the US know about Twitter, there is room for enormous growth both in the adotpi0n of Twitter, and actual use.

Watch “Twitter Usage in America 2010” video from Edison Research:

Highlights of the study include:

  • Awareness of Twitter has exploded from 5% of Americans 12+ in 2008 to 87% in 2010 (by comparison, Facebook’s awareness is 88%)
  • Despite equal awareness, Twitter trails Facebook significantly in usage: 7% of Americans (17 million persons) actively use Twitter, while 41% maintain a profile page on Facebook.
  • Nearly two-thirds of active Twitter users access social networking sites using a mobile phone
  • 51% of active Twitter users follow companies, brands or products on social networks

The best idea from this came at the end of the video.. a bit of a rant from @webby2001  on how the focus of Twitter apps and training have been on using Twitter and getting a message out… and that the future would be revealed as to how Twitter can improve our lives.

The study did conclude that most Twitter users are not tweeting… just lurking. I think there’s a flaw there.

What do you think?

Will Twitter be used as much as Facebook?

Can Twitter make your life better?

I’ll be watching for your comments here.

Twitter Helps Your Website Visitors Stick Around Longer

Twitter @Anywhere launched this week to allow any web site to use Twitter connections, tweets from your site and much of the functionality of Twitter right on your page.

image

@Anywhere will let you add more Twitter services to your page just by pasting in a simple bit of code. Users that tweet from your site bring more readers, users that interact without leaving your site stay longer, read more and feel more attached to your brand.

At the Chirpy developers conference, Twitter reveled that most of the tweet and traffic on Twitter are from 3rd parties and they are focused on developing easier ways to for the general public to use Twitter.

Other recent reports show that the majority of people signing up for Twitter hardly ever use the social media platform. There’s lot of way Twitter can grow even faster than just adding hundreds of thousands of new users each day.

One of the best ideas is allowing Twitter use @anywhere.

Can Twitter Grow Faster?

Twitter’s announcement of @anywhere signal where they are headed. Out to take over the web. Already on our phones, computers and in our hearts.. how much more Twitter do we want.

Quite a bit, actually. The majority of Twitter users are not using Twitter much, and the majority of web sites and computer users haven’t even adopted Twitter. (Seems unfathomable, but there are many who still say “I just don’t get it”

Some good information out on that today. @Mashable has 5 Twitter Trends to Follow and  Twitter itself is advertising this conference for developers

Now, I just need to find a way to monetize my Elizabeth Potts Weinstein is Annoying page (follow @ElizabethPW and you’ll see she is not)

Buzzing About Google Buzz

We’ve taken another step forward in the revolution. It’s called Google Buzz

There are all sorts of cool new technologies coming out this year.. location aware services, real time search results, and mobile processing that will blow away what we imagined possible just a short time ago.

However, I’m much more interested in the ideas that come from combining these in ways that make it easier for you and I to use the technology.

That’s why I”m excited about Google Buzz.

Tech pundits are discussing how it’s a lot like other products. Business pundits are discussion how one company will dominate in the market of the future.

Truth is, none of us know for sure. (though I would speculate that we will resist saying we are going to buzz about it :) .

Technology need to become boring before it’s truly useful – Clay Shirky

There are some cool features lurking in Google Buzz.. but best of all, it’s immediately useful. If you have a Google Account, you just click on the buzz selection under your inbox .. it’s as simple as that.

Here’s the Google Introduction video for earlier this week. I suggest watching it for the “gee whiz” effect and to think about the location and mobile implications.. then let me know how you might be using Google Buzz in a comment below. (include your Google Profile link. mine is http://www.google.com/profiles/wwhitlock)

Will The Masses Use Twitter?

Jeremy Toeman of LIVEdigitally asked “Will Normal Folks Ever Use Twitter?”

His assumption that a rise unused Twitter accounts were people who had abandoned Twitter, not spam or data errors led him to the conclusion that Twitter should take his advice and add some feature to make status updates a game.

Might be something to that.. but the whole post seemed to old school to me.

The assumption appeared to be that Twitter users are just media consumers and some experts have to tailor the experience and tweet the show.

That’s how the corporations who run old media think.

Twitter is the greatest listening tool ever invented.. but it would be foolish to assume that we are getting a mass market here.

And that’s the point… Twitter users (not those looking at it or signing up for an empty account) are past the buzz of “why would I want to know what someone had for breakfast?” and now having real conversations with real people.

Regardless of what else Twitter or others do.. we’re not going to stop talking to our new friends.

Do we really need a point system or badges when we are having a conversation?
